A new coal mine at Clermont in central Queensland's Bowen Basin has attracted more than 10,000 job applicants.
The Clermont mine will start extracting coal in April.
Rio Tinto says a move to recruit inexperienced people into the mining industry has exceeded expectations. The company's coal operations manager, Andrew Cole, says recruiting people from outside the industry will inject new life into the workforce. "It does take quite a bit of energy and time and obviously money to train new people to the industry but it also brings a lot of opportunities to get some fresh people in the industry," he said.

SA’s job market is stabilising and preparing for recovery as employers gradually regain their confidence on more positive economic news, say analysts in the recruitment sector.
“Companies are gearing up for growth in the early part of 2010 and are hunting for the right calibre of skills,” says Lars Forseth, director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa of Manpower, an international recruitment company.
“South African employers expect hiring activity to improve considerably for the first quarter of the year,” says Forseth, who was in SA this week.
Sandra Burmeister, CEO of executive search firm Landelahni Business Leaders, says the mining, infrastructure, transport and manufacturing sectors are all seeing an upturn. “There is also a demand for financial professionals, technical components, and those in governance and risk,” Burmeister says.

The Mining Journal is presenting an investor's seminar on Africa this March 19 at the Lincoln Centre in London.
Africa hosts amongst the best mineral deposits in the world. The continent represents 20% of the world's land area but contains an estimated 305 of the mineral reserves (by value). This includes 40% of the gold, 60% of the diamonds and fully 90% of the world's platinum group metals. According to the International Finance Corp, however, Africa's 53 countries are amongst the most difficult places in the world to establish a business. Nevertheless, mining companies can not pick and choose, they must follow the mineral deposits; and in this regard Africa is the place to be. This investor seminar introduces some of the companies that have established successful businesses there.

The Mining Journal is presenting an investor seminar on gold this April 9 at the Lincoln Centre in London.
Gold has always been set apart from other commodities and, amidst the ongoing turmoil in the global financial markets the metal is performing its historic role as a store of wealth. Still wary of the current environment, investors (professional and retail alike) want to focus on an asset that will at least hold its value. As a result, the gold price is poised to break back through the US$1,000/oz level.

The Mining journal is presenting an investor seminar on silver at the Lincoln Centre in London this February 18.
The recent market focus on gold has overshadowed a noteworthy performance by silver. The metal rose almost 80% in the twelve months to October 2009, reaching almost US$18/oz. The price is being driven by investor sentiment rather than the fundamentals, which are still rather weak. Inflows into silver exchange-traded funds increased in 2009, and there is also burgeoning investor interest in silver coins.

Most people don't fear being seriously injured in a fall at work, yet 8,102 deaths - nearly 540 per year - from falls were recorded between 1980 and 1994 in the workplace throughout the United States. In 2007, there were 67 mine fatalities nationwide.
Eric Freeland, a certified safety trainer and employee at Bridgeport Equipment and Tool in Bridgeport, said accident numbers in the workplace have been staggering in the United States. He did some research through the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health that revealed some sad statistics in workplace settings.
Everything from equipment accidents to snake bites took the lives of thousands of workers in recent decades.
These statistics only give impetus to Freeland's dedication to safety training. He conducts numerous industrial safety programs, including forklift, skid-steer, aerial platform and compact excavator operations. The training can take place on site at the various companies or at Bridgeport Equipment. Most classes take about five hours to complete.

Vacant coal mines in southwest Indiana could once again generate energy, not from coal, but from the water reservoirs now found on their surface and deep underground.
That is the objective of Purdue University geologists studying how to transform old strip and shaft mines into new sources of geothermal power, a process that could conserve energy during peak power-usage times and cut electricity costs.
"Our plan is to find the locations in the state where underground mines and surface mines coincide," said Terry West, a professor of earth and atmospheric science.
When surface mines and underground mines coexist, water can be pumped back and forth between the two to create a heat exchange.

Her conclusion? A website for safety professionals was needed. It would be a place that could be a hub of information for workers, employees like her, and employers. Today, Fisher has created the site and dedicated it to helping safety professionals and workers find the information they need.
Employed in the safety field for 6 years, Fisher has taken classes to obtain certifications in many areas of workplace safety. She is an American Red Cross instructor for seven different classes, an OSHA certified instructor, and a DISA drug and alcohol screener. She specializes in refineries and construction sites.

Western Australia’s booming economy could be good news for skilled worker migrants as a skills shortage looks set to hit the Australian state.
CommSec’s State of the States report ranked each Australian state for housing, jobs and population growth and it found that whilst Queensland is floundering behind because of the decline in tourism. Western Australia came top, with an economy that has grown by up to 26%.
The mining boom is thought to be behind Western Australia’s growth and the mining industry received another boost this month when gas was found near the Pluto field owned by Woodside Petroleum. Woodside are now planning to expand their Pluto gas export project and hope to have two production trains in by the end of this year and a third in 2011. That means a major boost to the local economy and more skilled workers required to help man the project.

The Middlesboro Mall united with Bell-Whitley Community Action Agency, Inc. on Thursday to help assist the unemployed in Bell County in their search for work.

Australia - Employers and candidates have been advised to make the most of the traditionally strong January recruitment market.
Job ads on the internet and in newspapers increased by 6% in December – their strongest monthly growth rate since May 2007, according to the ANZ job advertisement series.
However, the level of total jobs ads remains 23% lower than a year ago.
According to ANZ acting chief economist Warren Hogan, the surprising strength of recent jobs growth has seen forecasts for “peak” unemployment in 2010 come down considerably in recent months.
Rabieh Krayem, CEO of IPA Recruitment said that the spike was especially pleasing because it was larger than anticipated and spread across several sectors, including retail, finance, transport, logistics and mining.
